Methodology

How the matrix is curated

Every pick comes from independent, evidence led research, not vendor influence. Tools are placed the way finance teams usually buy them: by organisation size and by the trade off that matters most to the buyer.

01 —How the picks are made

The selection combines deep desk research with first hand knowledge from demonstrations and implementation work.

  • Deep desk researchEach category is researched from first principles, tested across more than one AI research model and checked against primary sources.
  • Hands on knowledgeDemonstrations and implementation work, where available, show how tools behave inside a finance team, not only what the brochure claims.
  • Evidence, not hypeThe review checks analyst positioning, review depth, funding and named customers. Shipped AI counts. Roadmap claims and AI washing do not.
02 —The UK and EMEA lens

Built for a UK and EMEA finance audience primarily, though still US applicable.

  • Residency and railsThe review covers data hosting and residency, GBP support, multi entity capability across the UK, Ireland and the EU, VAT and MTD, SEPA, Bacs and Direct Debit, and relevant electronic invoicing requirements.
  • Stated plainlyUK and EMEA fit is stated where it affects the decision. Where all three picks in a tier are US centric, the strongest regional alternative is named.
03 —Independence
  • No paid placementInclusion and position are decided on merit alone.
  • Curated, not exhaustiveThe matrix draws on a working database of more than 160 finance AI and automation tools, reviewed and refreshed regularly.

The matrix is a starting point, not a verdict. The right platform also depends on the organisation’s current processes, data quality, ERP and wider technology estate, together with finance maturity, team capacity and strategic priorities. Picks are current as of August 2026.
